You know the feeling – the embarrassment, self-doubt and hint of anger that all seem to swell up when you’re confronted with criticism over your performance or results on a project. Criticism can be hard to receive without taking personally.

The truth is that everybody in the professional sphere is accountable and responsible to one or more other people. Learning how to properly process and accept criticism from those with the authority and responsibility of providing it, is a sure pathway to success.

While nobody likes receiving criticism, nobody also does their job with 100% accuracy all of the time either. Positive and constructive criticism (following rules of good communication) will highlight areas where you can improve. In fact, learning how to accept and process criticism will help you master the tasks for which you are responsible.

This advice rings true in your personal relationships as well. Being somebody who can evaluate and respond to criticism allows you to correct areas that need improvement, many of which you may not even be aware.
